Chapter 7: The Other Side
His feet hit the ground hard as he ran with all his might. His heart was pounding in his chest. Fear was welling up inside him as he focused on his fragile escape. Blue was never an athlete in school, neither could he be considered any sportsman for that matter. The only ‘sport’ he had done was play hide and seek and run and catches with few of his friends who then gave up their sporting activity to focus on more important things in life like Star Trek. Blue hadn’t run in a long time, and he was feeling the pressure. Panting, gasping he ran, as he felt something evil close in on him from behind. He was too afraid to look; he knew it would hinder what little momentum he had. He just looked straight ahead and ran. He could feel it getting closer. The wind was getting choppier, and it wasn’t his speed doing that.
What he had seen had sent chills up and down his spine. He had screamed for a good 30 seconds until his mind sent the message to his feet to RUN! Here he was alone with his only friend possibly dead, running in the cold of Iceland with nothing but Queen Armadillo boxers on. He was getting nearer to Willy. There was no way he could save him. Hell, he didn’t think even he could save himself. Suddenly his body felt a jerk from behind as if had been fish-hooked from the back. He felt his feet coming up off the ground and his body was airborne for a split second. He saw the world rush past around him and everything became a blur. The last thing he saw was Willy’s body and the last thing he felt was wetness in the front of his boxers.
Then black. Silence.
The Hothead watched as the ground beneath him and shook. He looked up into the sky knowing very well what was happening. Moments later, the dark sky opened up and two limp forms fell to the ground hard. He grimaced. He waited, wary of what will happen next, watching if the forms were moving. They lay on the ground, still.
Are they dead?
He scurried his way towards the two bodies. They were his two new found friends, the one who was called Glue and the other one called Billy. The humans had weird names, but they seemed to care a lot about him.
‘Mmmmrrpp?’ slurred the Hothead.
No response. He prodded Glue’s hands with the top of his tildo shaped head. Still no movement.
‘Gnnnn aaah’ Blue groaned. The Hothead leapt with joy to see Glue coming back to life.
Blue woke up with a start. There was a searing pain all over his body and he was bleeding. He saw the Hothead looking at him. If it had a face it would have a look of curiosity he assumed. He didn’t know what had happened. One minute he was running full speed from the thing that had opened up in the sky and now he was in some strange place with the Hothead who been MIA.
‘You? Where did you disappear off to before?’ he scowled in pain at the little tildo.
He looked around to see the still form of Willy on the ground next to him.
‘Oh no, Willy!’
‘Billy!’ the Hothead nodded and ran off to Willy.
Blue gingerly crawled close to Willy. He lay crumpled with his legs and arms twisted in a grotesque manner. Part of his left arm was missing and he was covered in blood. There was a big gash on his forehead and he didn’t seem to be breathing. Blue checked for a pulse. He couldn’t feel anything. He shook Willy to wake him up, yet Willy didn’t respond. He called his name. Nothing. Tears welled up in his eyes. He had not known Willy for a long time but he was the closest thing he had to a friend in his life. They were work buddies, and never met up other than in the work place. Yet they were close co-workers and friends at best. But now Willy seemed to have left him alone in this unknown world. He was afraid and Willy had just left him like that. Without a warning, without a goodbye.
He sat back on the stony floor and started sobbing hysterically. He did not want to be here. Everything had seemed normal and carefree a few hours ago. How could things just turn upside down in a flash? He looked back on the events that had occurred. Am I trapped inside a very bad dream?
The Hothead looked up at Glue crying his eyeballs out. It reminded him of a time when he had seen a cinegraph of Hothead giving birth. The sound it had made was similar to the one Glue was making. Was Glue about to give birth? The Hothead rested his head on Blue’s bare thigh, trying to comfort him. Blue barely noticed him.
A strange feeling of remorse settled inside Blue’s heart. He wished they had not made all the decisions they made so soon. It would have been easier to get caught to Professor Gunasinghe. She would have told them off rudely for their incompetence, asked them to lock up the Hothead for further experimentation, and told them off again for their incompetence in front of the whole team. Then there would be a month full of glares and bad remarks about all the work they did, and their responsibilities would have been lessened. The worst that could have happened was being suspended from work for some time on the grounds of negligence. That was it. It all sounded like a piece of cake when he looking at the body of his best friend who had died an untimely death.
He couldn’t take it anymore. He knew that sitting around wouldn’t get him anywhere. He had to get out of wherever he was right now and also take back Willy’s body with him. The Hothead would probably know how to get out of here. He turned to the hothead who was beside him.
‘Putha, tell me how to get out of here?’
The Hothead blinked and looked at him solemnly. Blue did not know what to say. He felt stupid for talking this way to something that looked like a dildo. He tried again.
‘Where am I? Please help me get out of here.’
The hothead looked at him quizzically for a moment and scurried off to the darkness behind Blue. Fuck it! Blue thought. That piece of crap is what got us here and now it’s gone leaving me alone!
He looked around exasperated. He needed to find a way out. Everything was dark, cold and eerie. The pain in his body was throbbing and it had failed to subside. He wished that he was back home on his sofa watching Spongeboob’s Spare Pants. What he would do to be there? He slowly got to his feet. He looked around again. Every direction looked the same. What evils lurked behind the veils of darkness, he did not know. He took a step forward, and limped a few feet, straining his eyes to see any sign of help, in whatever form. Nothing. He limped a bit further. That was when he heard a sound behind him. He whipped around as fast as his aching body would let him.
He peered into the darkness. What had he heard? His fear escalated. There was no place to hide. He had no weapon to defend himself. Out of the darkness came the Hothead, in his hurried manner. Blue looked at the Hothead, and when he was just about to breathe a sigh of relief, he noticed that something was different with the Hothead. He couldn’t quite place what though. He made a move towards the Hothead. And then it dawned on him. This was not the hothead they had found in the lab!
And then he heard a noise like little pitter patter of feet, He stopped and stared. Out of the darkness, came another Hothead. And another, and another, until he was surrounded by an army of about a hundred Hotheads, slowing closing in on him.
